Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q)

Who do I see about getting a quest?
Many towns have questmasters (QMs) who will give out quests to complete for practices, questpoints, and gold. To get a quest, seek out the local QM and "quest request".
Who is "someone"?"
When you see references to "someone" it usually means that the "someone" is a player affected by the invisibility/improved invisibility spell. You can't see this person because you don't have "detect invisibility". Occasionally, "someone" is a player who has spellsurged, resulting in them being temporarily in "ethereal form". Those affected by ethereal form cannot be seen by mortals, even mortals with detect invisibility. Ethereal form wears off on its own in a short time.

What is a manual?
A manual is a special book that, when worn and used, raises a stat by one point or hp, sp, or st by 10 points. These tomes vanish after they are used once. Manuals save a lot of time that would otherwise be spent gaining practices to raise stats. Additionally, manuals are distributed throughout the lands only at reboots, making them highly sought-after treasures.
What is the maximum you can get in a stat?
25 is the maximum you can attain in Strength, Knowlege, Wisdom, Agility, Personality, Vitality, Luck, Courage, or Sanity. Hp, sp, and st depend on the racial maximum for your character (see our Races section for more information).
What affects how many hp/sp/st/practices I get when I level?
hp = vitality
sp = knowledge
st = vitality
practices = wisdom
What is an orb?
Vandemaar's Orbs, or "Orbs", are magical crystals that can be redeemed for 30-50 practices when presented to Balthazar in the Runic Temple. Orbs are reboot items.
What does it mean when you see (or experience) "ZOT you are struck by a thunderous bolt of lightning", or "A meteorite lands just near (player)"?
It means someone displeased an immortal (usually by making inappropriate comments on a public channel) and was punished with the hp-draining ZOT or slayed.
What is a tourmaline?
Tourmalines are small shiny stones that are needed to multiclass. You need 250 for the first multi, 1250 for the second multi, and 3000 for the third multi. Tourmalines are obtained by killing and looting mobs at Verity or the Proving Grounds on Wizardry Isle.
What is a root?
Maleficarum roots, or "roots", are essentially clan currency. Certain amounts of roots are required to build clan halls, upgrade clan halls, pay clan taxes, recall cross-zone, etc. To get roots you must kill and loot mobs in PG (the Proving Grounds) on Wizardry Isle.
Why can't I wear this equipment?
All equipment in Materia Magica has a minimum level at which it can be worn. This level can be determined by identifying the item. Equipment can usually be worn up to 5 levels below the specified level, unless it has the special tag enforce-level.
Why can't I see anything?
There are several reasons this may be the case. Most likely, it's night and you're in the wilds without a light. Like the real world, Alyria (the world Materia Magica takes place in) has day and night cycles. If you have no light at nighttime and you are not in an artificially-lighted area (such as a town), you will not be able to see anything. Another possible reason that you can't see anything might be that you're in a room which is naturally dark and you have no light. Naturally dark rooms are often found in caves and dungeons, although you may occasionally find such rooms in buildings. A third possibility is that someone has cast a room-darkening spell such as momentary darkness over the room where you are. This spell casts a temporary blanket of darkness on a room--although if you have sense life affecting you, you may see reddish outlines of creatures and PCs in the room. Lastly, you may be affected by the blindness spell. But we're assuming if this is the case, you know what happened to you.
Why is the wilds map smaller?
In keeping with logic and the day-night cycles in Materia Magica, you are able to see less area at night if you are in the wilds.
Why did I get transported out of Lasler?
Upon reaching level 10, novice adventurers are transported to cities where they can develop and grow in their combative and/or magical skills. Warriors go to Tellerium; Mages go to Sigil; Rogues to New Rigel; Clerics to Xaventry.
Why did that mob flee from me?
Some mobs have "wimpy" set, meaning that they will try to flee from battle if their hp gets too low. Just follow them and finish 'em off. Additionally, some mobs with low courage will flee upon the sight of PCs.
Why can't I hit anything?
In order to successfully fight, you need to practice your weapon(s) of choice--preferably to 75% or as close to that as you can get. Also, it may help to set your combat aim to target the most vulnerable spots on an opponent.
Why doesnt wimpy work every time?
Wimpy runs on a random timer which may kick in at any time after you reach the hp you have set as your "wimpy". When you do flee because of the wimpy setting, there is no direction specified which lessens the chances that you will flee successfully.
Why can't I flee?
The most likely reason is that you're A.) not specifying a direction in which to flee i.e. "flee S" or B.) You're specifying a flee direction in which there is a wall or some other obstruction.
Why are some people's names red/white/green on the who list?
White on the who list represents saints, or players with reputations of 100. Red denotes outlaws, whose reputations are 0 or below 0. Green represents players whose reputations fall somewhere in the middle of Saint and Outlaw status. Players' reputations go down by killing non-outlaw players. Reputation increases automatically at a rate of 10 points per real-life week.
When do repops occur?
Each zone has its own repop rate. You can tell when a repop has happened when all the doors in the zone "creak slowly closed" and mobs "arrive".
