The chill of autumn’s end was late that year, as Kat returned to the world of Alyria for a second time. It was mid October, yet still many trees showed more green foliage than usual. It was surely a sign of a weak winter, but also likely an omen of a brutal summer to follow.

She had visited the strange lands once before, months earlier, but hadn’t thought to stay. This time she was back, something yearning deep in side, driving her to make a new home here.

As the sun began to rise, Kat found herself suddenly awakened by a cleric. “Wake up, young one. You must be strong, and journey out from here. All must still seem strange, for someone so young… but fear not, for you are strong in body, and soon will become wise in mind.” As she slowly began to rise, her eyes began to focus. The new sun warmed her dew covered scales, the drops of dew acting like little magnifying glasses, intensifying the warmth now penetrating deep into her skin. The sun felt soothing, comforting, and energizing. It was still like this every morning for the dracon, a reminder of the cold-blooded lives her ancestors once lived. She sat up, slowly, and flapped her small, delicate wings a few times. The dirt collected overnight from sleeping on an earthen bed began to fill the air around her, turning the beams of morning sun a dusty red colour as they streamed into through the yellow glass windows of the monastery. The cleric helped her up, ushering her out the entrance, before her eyes had warmed enough to completely see the room around her.

As she stood outside, she noticed a small sign half hidden in a flowerbed next to the dirt road. She began to read the words she could see through the bountiful, densely packed colours of the plants and flowers:

“…lcome to Lasler. You have been brought her…”
“your own will, even if only from your subcon…”
“…ny perils ahead, but be strong, and the pow…”
“…y the Powers bless you. – Lasler Cleri…”

She wasn’t sure what exactly what to make of the placard, but somehow it soothed her, and beckoned her to continue down the path.

Kat spent a few weeks getting to know the folks around town. Everyone seemed nice enough, if not a bit on the strange side. She learned many new skills from the masterful trainers, and found herself quickly gaining knowledge in the arts of thievery. Then, as suddenly as she had found herself in Lasler, a shimmering white light enveloped her, and she found herself in a new, strange town.

Within a few moments, she had regained her bearings, and was standing on her feet again. She noticed that her head ached slightly, but this was the least of her worries. For the second time in as many weeks, she found herself in a completely new place, with little knowledge of how or why she was there. Yet still, possibly due to her naivety, she felt comforted. She quickly found a guard nearby, and inquired as to her whereabouts.

“Excuse me, sir. This may seem a tad strange, but could you tell me where I am?”

“Why, young lady, you are in the fair towne of Rune, home of the Great and Just Lord Agrippa, a model for all other towns to endeavour to follow. Surely, it matters not where you come from, yet you have heard of this great towne before!”

Seemingly more confused, Kat thanked the guard, and carried about her way. Looking for a bit of adventure, and a chance to practice some of her new skills, she found a little frog, which was quite to her disliking, and decided to slay it. Within a few moments, she found just how strong that ugly little frog was, as she met death for the first time in her short life.

A year or so had passed since Kat first found herself in Rune. She had grown quite strong, she thought, though more slowly than most around her. She had made many friends, most of who had raced on ahead of her, gaining strength at rates unimaginable to her small, dracon brain. As she was nearing her first multi-class, she met a strange man named Underdog. For someone so mighty, his name seemed quite queer. Even so, he was quite polite, and helpful, and even offered an invitation into his clan, Diversity. Against her young judgement, he convinced her to multi-class, a decision she would come to appreciate later in life. She would soon find that new barbarian skills would open a whole new world of exploration to her.

As time grew on, Kat roamed the lands, clanless, but with many friends in many clans. She grew slowly stronger, and wiser with every passing day. In due time, she became reunited with friends from a past life, and joined their clan, Cabal. But her stay with Cabal was a short one, lasting only a few months. The friends she had known long ago had changed in many ways. Some were distant, and feisty when they were about. Others were never to be found at all. It seemed as though only a few members were striving to bring the clan back to a glory it once new.

After spending a few months with Cabal, Kat encountered another, close old friend. Someone who had been with her through some tough times, in a life lived long ago. Nyghtmare, Queen of Excession, invited Kat to join her clan. Not wanting to give up so quickly on Cabal, Kat asked Nyghtmare for a few days to think it all over. She was dracon, after all, and thought was always one thing that never happened fast.

A few days passed, and Kat mulled over the disarray that Cabal was in, and the offer to join Excession. Being ever fed up with the disarray and endless work that was necessary to try to patch Cabal back together, she decided to take Nyghtmare up on the offer. After all, the members of Excession seemed to be around much more, and were much friendlier and more knowledgeable than Cabal had ever been. She informed the few Cabal clannies who seemed to matter, of the decision she had made. The leader at the time asked if there was anything he could do to keep her, but she had to inform him that this just seemed like the right decision, and the right change for her life. She harboured no hard feelings toward Cabal in the end.

Three or so years had passed since Kat had joined Excession. She was now the Queen, and many members had come and gone since she first joined. Even Nyghtmare, her long time friend, and one of the original founders of Excession, had left the clan. Times had certainly changed since she had first joined Excession. Times had changed enough to drive her to leave as well. So, with wind in her wings, she disbanded from Excession and set off on her own, again…

The first few days away from Excession seemed very strange indeed. A great time had passed since Kat had been out on her own. The freedom was bittersweet; she was bombarded with questions about why she had left Excession, and with invitations to join other clans. In the end, she felt it was destiny that Diversity was the first clan to offer an invitation. The invitation came warmly, without harassment, and with no strings attached. It seemed sincere, and as though Diversity knew of, and could understand, the time needed to recover from leaving another clan. So, the offer was accepted. And, as is often said in stories, the rest is history.
